How do you remove dead skin cells with an exfoliating glove?

I think we've either all experienced it during our visits to Turkey, or heard of it: hammam. Although I first thought that hammam was a kind of wellness treatment, it is part of the Islamic culture. Cleaning yourself before you start a prayer is part of this culture and one can do this in a hammam, these are often also near a mosque. Of course, these treatments are also given as wellness, but this is not the origin. During hammam, the body is steamed, washed, scrubbed and treated with foam. This is often followed by a massage. Since going to a hammam every week may not be feasible, you can perform some steps of this ritual yourself. This way you can buy a scrub glove yourself and experience it yourself! In this blog I will tell you why exfoliating is good for your skin and how you can do this yourself by means of an exfoliating glove.

What Happens While Exfoliating the Skin?

Scrubbing roughly means removing dead skin cells, this is done with a granular liquid (a scrub) or with an exfoliating glove. Although exfoliating is a term that is familiar to almost everyone and also widely used, it is often confused with exfoliating. This assumes the same, but is less intensive than scrubbing, so that we only remove the dead skin cells. With a scrub that is too hard, there is a chance that in addition to the dead skin cells, too many living cells will be removed. To make it easy, I use the term scrubbing in this blog, but know that the goal is to remove as few living cells as possible.

Our skin is an organ that is constantly in motion. Because our skin forms the barrier between our body inside and the outside world, the skin cells are continuously created and renewed. That means that there are also a lot of dead skin cells. When we remove this outer layer of dead skin cells by exfoliating, we give the skin more room for the production of these new cells, in addition, exfoliating the skin has even more benefits.

The advantages

  • It makes the skin radiant and healthy
  • Deeply exfoliates the skin without stripping healthy cells
  • Brightens the skin complexion
  • Tackles dry skin
  • Removes dead skin cells, blackheads and scars
  • Prevents ingrown hairs
  • Improves the texture of the skin
  • Makes the skin soft

How should you exfoliate?

Now that you know the benefits of exfoliating, it's time for some tips on how to best go about it. Of course it's not rocket science, you have to make sure your entire body is scrubbed. I personally find that the easiest with a scrub glove, this is also much more durable than buying a scrub that you have to apply with your hands. Here are some tips.

  • Start with your feet and work towards your heart, this stimulates blood flow
  • Make circular movements
  • Don't push too hard! You don't want to remove the healthy cells while scrubbing
  • Don't scrub too often, once a week is enough
  • Preferably scrub in the evening
  • The skin may turn red, but this is just a sign of blood flow. So a good sign!
  • Use a body lotion after exfoliating, this way you nourish your skin immediately and the skin will feel even softer.

Scrub and enjoy!

Although it can be quite a job to exfoliate your entire body, it is also a pleasure. Take your moment, choose fine soaps and pretend for a moment that you are in a hammam. Not really, right?
